Daniel Dennett

February 2, 2013

We’re reading work by Daniel Dennett this week and next, so I wanted to say a quick word or two about him.

Dennett is best known in the general for his mildly pugilistic advocacy of atheism. Here he is on this (and related) topic(s) in discussion with Bill Moyers

However, Dennett is far better known in philosophical circles for his work on the nature of mind, psychology, and action (especially, free will). This work, which is more-or-less independent of his work as a public philosopher, is our main concern here. Those who are interested in reading more of Dennett’s work on these topics might want to check out his Elbow Room and Consciousness Explained, both of which are well-written, innovative,  and serious attempts at coming to grips with very difficult problems.
